Environmental Stress - The Forests of Igugao Are Now Denuded

The signs of environmental stress in Igugao Province are fast becoming critical problems to the people. It poses serious consequences to the food production, health and productivity of the people and the whole province.

The forests of Ifugao are now denuded due to illegal cutting of logs for fuel and construction materials. There is also an increase in the demand of wood for the wood carving industry which Ifugao is famous for. In fact, Hapao is known as the original home of the woodcarvers. The virgin forests are being opened to give way to new agricultural lands and the people use the 'Kaingin' system or slash and burn method of agriculture.

The denuded forests have resulted in erosion, landslides, worn out rice terraces and farmlands and worse, the hydro-electric plant near the province, which is the Magat plant in Isabela, has been faced with low water levels and heavy siltation. Wild life, animal and plant species are also fast diminishing and some are either extinct or at the brink of extinction.

Patterns of diseases have also been altered as a result of the rampant denudation of the forest reserves of the province. Dengue, malaria, hepatitis, cholera, dysentery, etc., are a serious health problem of the people resulting in decreased productivity.

There is a need to sustain the existing forest coverage of Ifugao in order to save the scenic and stone-walled rice terraces that are considered as the 8th Wonder of the World. The campaign to slow down deforestation needs to be intensified, allowing the natural forest of Ifugao to regenerate and promote agro forestry.
